I was truly touched not by what the judges said, but by the courage Chris Rene faced in his 15 years of of addiction that could have killed him. Although I've never been addicted to drugs I've seen how it can affect a person and there are not many survivors like Chris out there who can live to tell. I wish Chris all the best and I hope his son can look up to him and grow up to be a wise man and to those who still have hope to not give up. I seriously couldn't help being teary each time I watched this...

Dissappointment...with another flower shop

Recently my son was sick with a major nasty virus. Usually I wouldn't think too much about it because kids tend to grow stronger after fighting a cold. This virus however was something I've never encountered before. Having 2 kiddy parties on the same day two weeks ago lead to 1 week of misery for my poor boy. He's asthmatic when he's sick and is always a good eater, but the virus caused him to vomit till he had nothing left ... for 4 days... Painful to watch, but he was a really good sport through it all. Poor guy would wake up in the middle of the night crying... because he was hungry. Thank God for prayers and for Pedialyte that helped him store some nutrients back into his system. Our doctor was funny to say it's OK if a kid doesn't eat for 2 days. A peace of mind... perhaps... Thankfully he's finally eating again and he's back to his good spirits! A little bored because I want him to recover at home before the parties start again...

So the real story starts here... while my son was sick my cousin in law's work place needed to order flowers to be delivered to someone out in the West side which I thought I could handle. Unfortunately after saying yes I realized I couldn't do it with my son being sick and it being the weekend. Therefore I asked for permission to order from another flower shop. I chose a flower shop I actually admired, but after ordering from them I have second thoughts. I'm not going to say which flower shop. After ordering the flowers to be delivered on the same day I was not notified the recipient was not home therefore they "automatically" decided for me that it would be delivered until someone called them back. I phoned in to follow up the day I ordered and requested it be delivered the next day. The owner said, "oh, our last deliveries are done for the day". I said, "OK.. tomorrow should be fine, thanks." The next day came along. I emailed the owner at 3pm due to their "last" delivery schedule and requesting to know the status of my order. I received no response and by 6pm I called in to follow up-again. I presume it was a designer who answered the phone. She put me on hold for 5 mins and came back to tell me she didn't know where the order form was or if the flowers had been delivered or not. She said she'd call me back, I said I'll call back, but she said they are closed. I requested to have the owner email me back, but they ended up calling me back the next morning when I was not available and left me a message saying it would be delivered on the 3rd day of ordering the flowers. I phoned them back and the girl said, "oh, I left you a message maybe you didn't get it." I said, " I did get it, I'm calling to confirm it will be delivered today then?" Truthfully I was darn pissed because the customer service was poor and I also ordered from them because by google map they are 10 minutes away from the delivery location.

To add to my frustration... I requested a total of $50 including tax and delivery and I checked my bill today... they charged me $50.40... it's not even about the money... they are horrible and I will never recommend them to anyone!

I felt really bad because I chose to order from another florist and my cousin's company was asking if the flowers were delivered or not...

From this experience it just reminds me of why I had to start my own business. I have worked in a few flower shops and I can honestly tell you if I have the choice I don't want to go back - ever. No offense, but women boss's are the most difficult for me and this is why I chose not to open a flower shop. I don't want to be a "b" boss.

Truthfully no one knows how stressful it is working in a flower shop and the ugly that goes behind this industry. I find that florists sometimes get taken advantage of and work their butts off, but don't get enough pampering or rest. It's very labor intensive and hard on the body...

I started my business because I care about my customers, and I care what they receive and how they feel. I get giddy and excited when new projects arise. I want to give them not only quality, but a good impression. My mind doesn't go to rest when I have projects. It's my passion, but if I had a flower shop... I'd be a nasty boss with all the stress.... so I chose to specialize, and not be snobby about it...but keep being humble and thankful each day.

I seriously was disappointed dealing with another flower shop and I cannot tolerate people who think they are a good designer or whatever and belittle people. I truly hate it. Just because you are good, there is always someone better than you.

I was so mad I talked to my husband about it, and his response was... "it's hard to get good customer service these days. If you get someone good, it's a bonus". yes... we also had an issue with our internet company who decided to show up without notifying us... I didn't let him in to install, he handed me the gadgets, left and he had the nerve to say he completed his order - messing up our internet... Arrrrgghhh....

I seriously hate bad customer service!

So sorry for those who had to go through my pain of reading this... it's a place for me to be true to you.

Joyce Piano Recital 2011

My sister in law is very committed when teaching her piano students and I hope her students enjoyed this years big event recital. It's interesting to see familiar faces how they have grown and their (or parents) dedication playing piano. My son's music teacher and a counselor friend said music is truly a healing therapy. I think I'd literally die without music. It's how I got to know Jesus!

T's 4th Birthday Party

Last night was the BC Professional Wedding Awards 2011. A big Congrats to Union Photographers for winning Best Portrait of the Bride & Groom Together. Well deserved "applaud"!
When it comes to long hours of wedding work, I seldom get to see my clients at their wedding, but thanks to Roger and Holly I can share my work with you. One thing I remember is Kat said Alvin was pretty handsome when she first met him. Pretty much love at first sight. How cute.

You read right, Piana! It was back in July 2007 when I was in Japan at Tower Records doing what I enjoyed most standing at the listening post checking out new sounds. I just had some wedding work over the weekend and when I'm working I like to have music with me and Piana popped up in my mind. Music to me brings back strong memories or feelings and sometimes it gives me inspiration to work as well. Does it do the same for you? Funny thing is while I was making my clients bridal bouquet I was actually thinking of her and this song helped me visualize what she'd like. Most of the time though I listen to a lot of Praise songs. It's what gets me through the most.

Thirsty for Lemonade Cocorosie style

I discovered Cocorosie a couple of years ago I believe back in 2008 when they made a track for Prada's Trembled Blossoms video. I was more captivated by the electronic, ambient, vocal sounds rather than the visual, but ever since I've added Cocorosie to one of my fav's. I stumbled upon this video and it had all the elements I'm loving so far. The time, place, costume, the way it's filmed...it's spooky! (but I'm not a spooky person) The Native American man topped it off totally! The lyrics may be a bit disturbing for some, but nonetheless I love this video! Mind you some of my favorite movies were Interview with the Vampire, Mozart, Marie Antoinette etc, I think you get the point. I wonder what sort of style of flowers I'd make for this kind of theme...hmm... makes me wonder...
The beginning of this track also reminds me of something I've heard before... ah yes! My Immortal by Evanescence which leads me to the next track I'll be listening too. I love youtube~

Taiwan Celebrity Wedding?

A friend on my facebook posted this video of a Taiwanese girls singers wedding ceremony. Sadly to say I don't even know her name or who she is for that matter. My mandarin is pretty rusty so am not entirely sure what they are saying either, but regardless it looks like a nice wedding and very sweet near the kissing part. As a florist it makes me nervous to see the groom giving the father of the bride of a nice shoulder hug, also giving his boutonniere flowers a nice squish as well~

I didn't need to go to a wedding to eat such a yummy VEGAN cake! It's hard to find a moist and soft VEGAN cake. I emphasize on vegan began I tried looking for one through friends who bake, companies who bake, but they all cook with animal products. I discovered from my son's friends birthday party a lady just likes to do it as a hobby or for experimentation as she said it. But look how crazy fancy it is! Bravo for my mommy friend who planned this party for her son. It was fun and my son enjoyed it so much I think he wanted more. Kids parties are a whole new event planning party nowadays.

Princess Kate

I didn't plan to watch any of the wedding last night, but only 30 minutes until I got tired. Although I didn't see the actual ceremony happen I did enjoy seeing all the vibrant colored headpieces!

My take on Kate's bridal bouquet was really simple, but as People's magazine puts it on April 26th: "The overall look for the day, adds the florist, will be understated. "I think you can get 'wow' in several ways, and it certainly won't be 'Wow, what an extravagance!'" he says. "It will be, 'Wow, how beautiful' and hopefully, 'How perfectly suited to the day and the nature of the marriage.'"

I think this is true how it's beautiful and perfectly suited for the nature of the marriage. Kate is smart for not carrying a ton of flowers and her dress I actually loved the lace part. I guess lace is in and it's not classy for a Princess to show too much skin. One thing I'm happy about is when I got married in 2007 I had similar elements to Princess Kate's wedding dress and flowers! (but I was not nearly as beautiful as her)

I was super excited when Amanda the editor from Canadian Florist Magazine contacted me back in January asking if I was interested in making some bridal bouquets for their May issue. Thanks to my friend Yukari for referring me and Dan and Kat for taking the photos at such short notice. I was having a miserable day today because I felt like a bad mommy, lost my warm, new gloves, got on the wrong train and my little man only got 30 mins of nap which was not enough. However tonight without even knowing the Canadian Florist magazine site issued my work! It made my day. I really put a lot of time, effort and thought into my work and sadly to say this I've come across people who just don't appreciate it. Yes it does make me feel like crap as I'm more of an emotional and sensitive person. I think to me it's all about being appreciated for what I love doing. I believe who I am makes me the Simply Sweet Florist - one of a kind. Well enough rambling, but here is some of my work and some inspirations. Hmm, now I am only 2 hours away to see Kate and William's wedding (flowers).... I wonder what they will look like, but I think I'll call it the night.

Pedi Floral to wear

Feet/Foot Floral. Your feet will never smell this good! Since I'd die walking in platforms such as these I'd prefer a more subtle look with flats or nude pumps which is pretty hot this spring season. This was last years Spring 09 Scherer Gonzales Fashion show. I personally feel they need to find another florist. The white calla lily, orchid and narcissus however is a nicer combination. I'm no shoe expert, but perhaps the shoe style was wrong to begin with.

Teddy Bear to hug or to wear..

This was given to me from a friend as a reference. For Chinese weddings it's a really popular gesture to also include corsages for helpers and ushers which I know is not popular amongst the western, but this is the first... a teddy bear on your wrist! My son has been eyeing it so I finally gave in and let him wear it. Next thing I know he tosses it in the sink, but the bear survived. If anyone is wondering I won't be making teddy bear wristlets anytime soon. Just wanted to share.

Last weekend I attended a flower show I guess you could call it that. My son has been sick so busy with taking care of his runny nose and cough so bare with the messy posting. I really wanted to share with you the beautiful product I saw. Many of the beautiful and gorgeous flowers are imported from Japan. Seriously Japan produces pretty darn stunning floral product! Everyone did a double take. Even florists got tricked by their stunning beauty. Some of the arrangements in the photos are designed by Kevin Ylvisaker AIFD telling us about trends, tips and new color palette for 2011. Notice the bold and bright colors! Pretty hot this year! Color blocking is so in... get your colors on people!

Make your own 8-bit Mario Plant

When I saw this I was so ready to make a whole garden of them! Another project I'd love to get my hands on. Only I would not have used real soil because it gets messy. I would use a longer container and stuff the inside adding a green ruggy finish to represent grass. We shall see if I ever get to it since I discovered making clay macaroons~ Having a real plant requires a lot of patience and love. I know plant lovers who talk to them and say they have feelings. Hmm, I thought talking to a machine was silly~~, but I love my silly friends.

I believe in ideas and thinking out of the box, but if it isn't executed right - don't bother. I really loved the movie Avatar, but after seeing this I'm not so sure I want to see another person painted blue with two uncomfortable looking bridesmaids & a bride or two brides???? The movie was awesome, but this photo - I'm sorry... China was offering Avatar themed wedding which obviously failed. Why am I posting? When I saw this back in February I had a good laugh, but now I just think it's wrong so don't go this path. I saw a video online of an actual Avatar themed wedding and it was glistening with LED lights, tall glowing branch centerpieces to portray the Tree of Soul. The ambiance of it all - perfect! There are tricks to make your wedding beautiful and one of the most important elements is lighting. Anyway, here's a good laugh if you're stressing out and feel nothing is working out for you today... some things are worse...

Photo Shoot Day!

I can finally sit down after a busy week! You know when you have deadlines to meet you can start on them 1 or 2 or even 3 months ahead? Well, depending on your profession... As for a "Me, Myself and I" floral designer my deadlines start the day before and always run past midnight and way into the next morning. I spent about two to three hours, maybe four, arranging each bouquet and didn't go to sleep until the next morning at 7am making sure I got a little snooze before Dan and Kat came from StonePhoto. Don't get me wrong, I plan well ahead for the big day! If I had to say what I put 100% in it would be my flowers (and my son). I respect my work, my viewers and of course many who appreciate it. Like you who's reading now~ *hugs*

My little broken digital camera isn't really performing as well as he use to so I'll just post a little sneak peak until the professional photos are ready. Stay tuned...

My experience with StonePhoto was a good one! They made me feel really comfortable and were very communicative which is so important in being a photographer. I like their compatibility in working together how Kat is really sweet, really detail to attention, reads people well, has a good eye and Dan is the good technical guy that just bubbles a calculation in his head and he speaks his mind all the time. They were just great company~ We had the shoot at the very base of our...basement. My pet peeve is silence while working so I thought I'd break the ice with some music. Good thing we played the right music with Jason Mraz, Michael Buble, Jack Johnson and of course our UK band Coldplay. Dan even started singing when Chris Martin started singing. I really appreciate their hard work, their determination, their commitment, their punctuality, their honesty and it's a beautiful thing to have in a business! Not to mention their professionalism. I just wished I had healthy snacks for them to munch on. They spent three long long hours, maybe more, taking five of my bouquets in every shot possible because they care. They must have used up a lot of brain juice~ Thanks guys! Would love to work with you guys again in the future and hopefully it's an actual wedding next time.

My Treat for Women's International Day!

I was feeling really down today. Not sure if I need an extra boost of vitamin D, or it was just one of those gloomy days when I wanted to feel special. I bugged my hubbs about wanting a treat and yay! I got what I wanted! It was so yummy, I saved some for tomorrow. I think one is mixed berry mousse cake and the other one is tiramisu cake from Urban Fare. Not so sweet like the macaroon so it was nice with my organic green tea~ I hope all you ladies out there got treated special and for the men out there I hope you treat your female friends, family and spouse well too! Not just today, but for everyday~

After meeting up with the photographers I decided to take the transit to downtown to find some materials. I've actually cut down on a lot of driving because I find commuting by bus or sky train makes me appreciate things more. Enjoy the beauty of God's creation! Also Go Green! Ever since being a mom I'm leaning more into being ECO mom. I had to go to Dressew Supply to grab some materials and MAN, that store has everything, anything you need! If you are crafty, love costumes, working on a school project, into fashion, need a bra fix, just love fabric - this is your place! I found everything I needed all in one store! Even grocery shopping I need to make a few stops here and there, but not Dressew! I honestly can say I really like this store.

When shopping was done I realized I was starving. Not being in downtown for so long I had no idea what was around, open or edible. I did spot a Cafe across from Dressew and since I was in a rush I just settled. I was actually quite impressed! I ordered a traditional breakfast with 2 farm eggs over easy, a toast with butter and jam, pan fried potatoes and 2 breakfast sausages for ... guess how much... $4.95!!! Can't beat IKEA, but still Yum Yum and farm eggs was a bonus! I also had a Earl Grey tea with legit tea leaves and decided to grab a Macaroon on the go. I'm not a sweet tooth person so it was a major sugar high for me. Nice little place and a bus stop in front. There wasn't any disappointment except when I asked where the washroom was it was not in service. After touching all the fabric and materials at Dressew I refused to eat without washing my hands. The guy offered me to use his little sink, so fair enough. It's called Bon C haz.
If you are ever in that area... grab a sandwich or dessert. I'm not into coffee so I'm not sure how good it is. Quite reasonably priced, and fresh product! I noticed they do wholesale for restaurants and Chef's as well. The customers that ate there were pretty random too. Young twenties to seniors! (I categorize as the young twenties... I wish..) But all in all I had an awesome day. My morning started at 9:30am and I got home at 3pm just in time to see my family during their late lunch. I missed my little man. He's such a sweetie and his sweetness I can never get enough of~

Meeting the Photographers!

The last time I met professional photographers was back in 2008 when my husband and I got engaged. This time I'm getting ready for a photo shoot for my flowers and found Kat & Dan from Stone Photo. I remembered them from the BC Professional Wedding Awards and I think they are awesome. We met up today and they were pretty cool even though I was late. Thanks guys. (It's really hard with the little one...I need to look at least half decent before stepping out the door)
Anyhow, their energy and friendliness left me confident to know I have no worries they'll do a beautiful shoot for my babies aka "bouquets". Too bad I contacted them after their wedding otherwise I would have loved to have done their wedding flowers. I appreciate good work in good people, and not just any person who holds a digital camera and claims to be a professional.. you know what I mean?~~ If you ever contact them please let them know you found out about them from Simply Sweet!

Winter Wedding in February~

I was really happy to hear a friend of mine who I met through my husband got engaged last year. I had the honor to do her bridal bouquet last weekend. A simple, intimate, perfect wedding! It was a lovely wedding and how magical it was to snow! My camera battery died so I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the snow. Baby blue was her husband's wishes so I took ideas from her wedding invitation and came up with some silver accents. Nice that I can use blue delphinium flowers as well, but not so sure if I'd want to spend hours making 20 corsages and boutonnieres out of them. They are so delicate. I seldom use bridal bouquets holders, but I thought it would fancy things up and make the bridal bouquet more elegant. I also added some green viburnum to give it an extra oomph. Next projects for March coming up soon~ Stay tuned...

Last week my hubbs and I decided to go out for a much needed one-to-one dinner. Originally we wanted to go to Horizons because they sent out coupons and I also need to do a wedding later this year there so I thought why not. Since it was Dine Out week it was fully booked. I said maybe another night then. So, the second option was this little Japanese restaurant I would pass by when I drove to Vancouver and always wanted to try it out. Just by the appearance I already knew it was owned by "real" Japanese - lol. It's called Kimura and if you are looking for a big chunky meal, this is not your place. Instead it's more specialized in Yakitori, tempura, appetizers, rolls, onigiri, but not an izakaya!. A more jazzed up, fusion type I guess? They did serve the nabeyaki don's, but we decided to order side dishes instead. Oh and they had a Kimura Omakase (chef's choice) for $30 each person. They even served Kobe beef~ Overall it was a good restaurant. Enough room to fit a family of 6 with kids on top! If you see Japanese people eating in a Japanese restaurant, it's a good thing. I was so busy talking to my hubbs I only took very little photo. The photo is Spicy sashimi on crispy rice! It was yummy and the portion - good! We even had Asahi too! Didn't feel like sake. So if you are ever in that area, try it out! The only thing my hubbs complained about was we had to share 1 menu and it was a little inconvenient. Other than that, there were a lot of servers and we enjoyed our night!

Yes, I know it's pretty late to post about getting in the Courier back in December 2010's issue.
Well, our family was quite sick with a nasty, stubborn, annoying virus that got passed down from one person to another. Whatever it was, I'm not welcoming it back! My poor little man suffered the most. He was literally glued to me and wasn't able to eat. The worried mom I was he eventually recovered and started walking shortly after! Yay! Perhaps it is true when they say they get stronger after getting sick~ So if there are any moms out there, fear not, sometimes a little cold is all good for the growing in our little ones.

Wow, what a night! Simply Sweet won "Best Wedding Florist - Overall" !!!

Still in shock and trying to let it all sink in~~ I'm really thrilled and honored and also feel very humble at the same time. Never really expected to win anything last night. I was basically looking forward to a night out with my Hubbs and maybe even bump into a few friendly faces. I wasn't even sure if my submission got nominated, but standing there waiting for Justin Eckersall to announce Best Wedding Florist - Overall last night really blew me away when I heard Simply Sweet Floral Designs... My first reaction, "Oh my God"... - couldn't believe it, I better go up on the stage to accept the award. The funny thing is I don't think anyone knew who I was, since I've only been in the business for 5 years and feel like such a small potato. Like my husband says I've worked in a cave all these years.

My heartfelt thanks goes to Tracy Volb, Managing Director of BC Wedding Awards. She contacted me back in September and encourage me to participate. She even complimented how nice our website was and that I should be proud. I'll give credit to my husband and my friend Tony who helped design it.

At the event I did feel the location at first was a bit dodgy, but never judge a book by it's cover because I felt special the moment I walked in and commented it's the first time going clubbing with my husband - as a joke. We had our coats checked, was handed a program with complimentary tickets to try some appetizers and even had our photos taken professionally!

Inside was a ginormous screen because it used to be an abandoned Asian cinema. I like how there were a few chefs who were there to let us taste test the hors d'oeuvres they prepared. I even asked one chef from Emelle's Catering how long it took to make the shrimp sauce and he said 48 hours. We got to vote for our favorite appies, and although the one I voted for didn't win I appreciate all his effort into preparing for hundreds of people last night. To me the taste was memorable and that's what caught my attention.

All proceeds from the event were donated to InterSections Youth Society . There really wasn't any more to top off the night, but as the guests were heading out, we were given a small souvenir of chocolates from Thomas Haas (compliments from Real Weddings) Yummy!

Oh, I forgot to mention there was PIXSTAR Photobooth which brings me back to my high school days except I wasn't with my girlfriends. I had the opportunity to meet and shake hands with Emcee Fred Lee from CBC. His energy was perfect for the night. We had some good laughs.

Another Year Another Recital

My sister in law is a piano teacher and every year she hosts a recital just for her students. She makes it extra special for her students where they get to perform, dress up formally, takes lots of photos and invite their family and friends to watch at the Shadbolt Center for Arts in Deer Lake. It's basically a pretty big event for the young boys and girls. I think it's a great way for them to gain experience and gain confidence in front of a live audience. This year I had the opportunity to make a few arrangements. Since Christmas is really just around the corner I decided to make something a little more festive for them. Congrats to those who've made it this far with Miss Chan! I also have to mention how wonderful my Hubbs was to look after our little one and cook us dinner tonight! I was so impressed and appreciative of him.

After ramen I decided I wanted to have a little dessert. I saw Capers across the street and decided to see what they had in the bakery section. I LOVE their Chocolate Mousse cake. It is my favorite dessert so far. However, I decided to try a Vegan Chocolate Cupcake and I guess I should have known it's vegan for a reason.... Anyhow, it was worth the try and I feel sorry for anyone who is allergic to dairy because it does taste so much better...
We liked how they gave it to me in a plastic cup!! Smart thinking Capers / Whole Foods! I also liked how the cookie said organic, oh and it was only half a cookie~ Tasted like a less sweet oreo and I haven't had an oreo since I was a kid feels like~~

Yummy Ramen!

After work we had some RAMEN! I love good quality ramen especially during cold winter season. My husband suggested to try this place out and it was worth the 15 minute wait! I like the decor and the fact so many people work there. I liked watching them prepare each ramen as customers ordered. I ordered my Shio Ramen! I love the creamy soup and even though only 2 slices of fatty pork were given I was still very satisfied! They had something unusual for me in the soup and that's ume. I think it gave a twist to the taste and quite memorable! Also it wasn't super salty like other places. My husband had the kara miso ramen with grilled salmon on rice. The gyoza was sure homemade. Fresh meat with hints of ginger and gyoza wrapper was nice and thin. I say two thumbs up and I look forward to go back one day~~ Right, it's called Hokkaido Santouka Ramen!

I finished another project today and it was another great opportunity where I got to design and help out for the convocation! I like making people happy with flowers. I'm not good with speaking or expressing verbally, but with flowers I can. The convocation was held at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and the people who work there are all nice. I wish service was like this everywhere. I enjoyed seeing everything put together and how everything really looked great for the function. I hope the students of 2010 will have a great future ahead of them!

I had to make up a few floral arrangements for a convocation and just a few behind the scenes of what happened during the process. The weather was getting to "minus" and for some reason one of my vases cracked on it's own. The next morning I saw a cracked vase! So, since problem solving is part of the business I had to think of a plan B. Every little detail matters to me and for some it may not be very obvious, but I had to play around with the different vases a bit and find one that matched! I'm quite anal when it comes to doing my own flowers so I decided to make twins or companions, however it's called, for each station where the arrangements would be placed and they turned out well! Thank God again!

I must say it was such an honor to have Chris+Lynn Photography be the photographers for one of my clients, Stephanie and Edmund's wedding back in August. I love their photos and knew of them since 2007. What an honor to have them photograph my floral arrangements three years later! To have them take photos of my work is really a dream come true! I spend minutes looking at each photo on their blog and love them all. I work in my little studio which is limited to space and I spend long hours, sometimes all night working my bum bum off (which isn't a bad thing). They complimented, "the flowers were the freshest they've seen all season" really made all that hard work feel appreciated. Even though we've never met in person I think they are awesome already! Thanks Chris+Lynn! Looking forward to that day :)

Whenever I think of September, Greenday's "September" track pops in my head. A friend referred Tinnie to me and she emailed me in September regarding her October wedding which was only a month away. I'm glad we got to meet along with her fiancé Chris at this cool coffee shop on Main street to talk about their wedding. I have to say there has not been any consultation that is the same or similar. It's always an adventure! I never know where it will lead me. I really liked their colors as well. Every wedding is a fresh start for me! In the beginning it was teal and red, but since red is not something that appealed to Tinnie we toned it down to pinks, light peach and white. Subtle hot colors were added in the less apparent way using ribbon and tiny flowers like spray roses and cool elements like angel hair. It's all about accessorizing! So she got the best of both worlds!

My first florist boss said flowers are just like human. They need to accessorize to look good! I thought that was funny and that was 12 years ago!

Did I really Win?!

I kept on asking myself "did I really win?!" while holding my son trying to get him to sleep last Thursday night. No, not the lottery...

So I've been a fan of YOYOMAMA for maybe almost a year now, that's when I discovered them. It's an awesome site for mothers in Vancouver and Toronto. It's really made my life as a mom much more exciting hitting all the hottest things in town and finding the best sales, swap meets, festival, events... you name it, they'll have it! I'm also a fan on their facebook and they were giving away Jack Jonhson tickets because they couldn't make it to see him. I thought, OK, I like him so it doesn't hurt to try and I would have never believed I'd win! I was so excited, but the funny thing was I couldn't wake my son up (was holding all my excitement in silence). I was randomly chosen so that was the best part! Regretfully I couldn't stay the whole night until the concert ended because I'm a mom and my little guy likes to have his mom when it's bed time. Sadly he fell asleep because he was so tired waiting for me. The best part was Jack Johnson was really good. I wish I could have brought him home with us and just let him sing and play his guitar all night... It was great and Thanks again Yoyomama!! I really had a great time and a good excuse to have a date with my husband. It's been way too long since I've been out past 10pm.

I must not forgot to thank Farm Folk City Folk as well for giving out these tickets. Jack Johnson personally gave these tickets to them to give away and in the end they landed in my hands!~ How special is that :)

I like to post of OPT: Other People's Talents. If you've followed my blog I have a good friend who I did a wedding for 2 years ago I met from my old work place and it's a blessing having her in my life. I knew she has good fashion sense am a smart cookie, but didn't know she was so artsy either. I've received some cards from her and after visiting her I can see she does have talent for hand made cards! These are some of her creations. It's so simple yet so nice. Since Christmas is just around the corner it explains why mostly Christmas only. If you are interested in more of her work she'll be at Nikkei Place on November 21st, 2010 for a craft show. Don't forget to eat at Hi Genki next door! Last and certainly not least there's us with my little Man. He travels a lot with Mommy and I love him to pieces!

Home Expo 2010

Here are some cool things I saw at the Home Expo this year at the New Convention Center.

Yes, not a lot of home designs that caught my eye. A lot of people were at Home Delight. I entered into many draws and actually received one phone call from one of the vendors. He said I didn't win the grand prize (a salad something), but won a set of knives and also one complimentary dinner that they would cook at our house. I just thought, give me my knives and then we'll talk. We knew it was a scam. We haven't even heard from them again. Boo to them. Unfortunately I forgot the name or I'd boycott them. So be careful when someone says you win something! Gotta make sure it's legit.

Well, we were more looking towards lighting and sadly there was not a lot of selection. We just found it odd to have a flat iron booth there. I almost bought one...

Being a fan of Echivera Succulents I had to take photos of them when I saw how beautifully they were arranged and displayed. So beautiful. I really admire the person who took care of his/her plants so well. Awesome!

Just before I was about to leave I saw the Nintendo DS Cafe! It was darling! The feel of it was as though it was made up of cut up paper. I loved it. The "waiter" was a bit of a show off since I have never played with a DS before had to show us how the game was played after so many tries of failing~ I thought he looked like Mario without the mustache.

The theme color of this wedding was green and white with hints of light pink. The couple is very gentle and easy going. I had another client asking for the same day, but Lorinda wanted to book Simply Sweet so I made sure I held the date for her. I'm glad I did because every creation for Simply Sweet is a new one and different one in every detailed way. Dinner at the Chan's

I had a great time tonight seeing an old time bud from highschool whom I haven't seen in years. Plus another bud who I haven't seen in months. I was determined to make dinner for my friend's belated birthday because ever since I had E life really is not as flexible as I would like it to be. I said I would hang out and have dinner since April, but never got a chance so to make it up to him and an excuse to really get together and catch up I made a Rib Eye steak with a nice chorizo sauce... yummy! The mash was my favorite. Thanks to my friend G san who's a really good cook (and learned quite a few Nihingo in Asia) gave me a few pointers on the cooking procedure which made dinner a pleasure! To top it off I had Mona, the owner of Something Yummy, custom make a cake for my friend's belated B. He loves airplanes and sweets so this cake was perfect to end off the night. I'm also glad E liked Uncle G so much he held on to him until my Hubs came back. We also agreed to doggy sit our friends poodle for a couple of days. If you've read my blog from the past it's Pumpkin! He's a good dog, but we hope he'll do fine without his kennel... Really like to make friends happy and with a full satisfied tummy! Now I'm glad I got the groupon for the three hour eco cleaners that's going to come in handy! We've got more entertaining to do in the coming weeks!

It's 2am... I'm up not because my son woke up in the middle of the night, but I just finished a wedding for tomorrow. Driver guy comes at 7am for pick up and yet I still want to post on my blog. Thankfully the weather cooled off so it made it a lot easier to work. My studio is basically the garage and our garage door opener broke just down when I needed it most. Good thing my husband found a good company to get it fixed right away. I'm happy another wedding is done and hope the couple will have a great wedding!

..... it's been pretty busy with wedding after wedding and no time for rest. I must say it's tough having a baby and working at the same time. I'm a full time mom and when I'm working on wedding projects I'm a full time florist. So how does that work? Thankfully, really thankfully I have family and a supportive husband who helps out big time. Most importantly I believe it was my loving God's grace. Without Him I wouldn't have been able to do everything myself.

Here are some highlights of what has been going on for Simply Sweet and if you notice odd looking things other than flowers it's because we can really customize a couples wedding to their liking so we picked out some funky things to add to the couples special day to make it even more memorable and fun for them!

I'm sure a lot of you know her by now. Michelle Phan. I came across her videos on youtube and finally one for wedding make up! I was waiting for her to do a tutorial on this. Yay! I believe the key is to really prime your skin, keep it healthy and glowing. That will help keep the makeup on nicely for your big day and honeymoon! Hope this helps some of you brides out there if you are debating whether to hire someone or DIY. It costs about $250 to hire a makeup artist in Vancouver. I'm sure with that amount of money you can get a lot of makeup products from Sephora~ Practice makes perfect!

FLOWERS PREVENT CRIME

Citizens link the plunge in the number of burglaries in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, to the planting of flowers in seldom-used backstreets.

Planting of flowers was dramatically increased due to measures taken by the municipal government to beautify the ward in order to help prevent crime. The ward found that the number of burglaries has fallen to less than one-quarter of the previous year. Suginami had been a burglar's haven due to its high concentration of residential housing along narrow streets.

The municipal government conducted a survey in 2005 to find out why burglars target certain households. The local government noticed that of the 100 homes, only two of them had flowers in their entranceways and gardens.

The local government believes that when local residents use the alleys between their houses to take care of flowers or to enjoy them, they are also more likely to spot suspicious activities or suspicious people, a result it believes useful in crime prevention. Interested in the potential benefits of this strategy, requests and inquiries to visit the ward have poured in from municipalities around the country.

Regarding the situation as critical, the municipal government introduced ‘security beautification regulations’. They launched a campaign to have people plant flowers, and appealed to them to join a Hana Sakase Tai (Flower Blooming Squad). Presently, there are 981 registered residents participating in the project.

“By beautifying the streets and preventing crime we're killing two birds with one stone,” said Asako Sayama, 59, a housewife who is a member of a flower-planting team. “Through the activities, we're also bringing neighbors much closer together than before.”

Sure enough we are always busy, on the go, or just need to grab a bite in between appointments so why aren't there any healthy fast foods? Well, there is one now! It's a new place called Healthee that just opened up in February 2010! I haven't tried it myself personally yet but I really like the selection they have on the menu - healthy soups, wraps, meats etc! When I'm out strolling with my little guy and feel the stomach wanting to growl I tend to find nothing that really excites me - other than sushi of course, but it's not like I can sit down and have a proper meal with my 8 month old. So, I plan to check this place out sometime and when I do I'll post about it!

Happy Hearts Love Sharks Campaign

If you are like me, not that crazy about shark fin soup, here is something worth reading. It's a campaign to help save the sharks. "If a Vancouver-area couple serves an alternative to shark fin soup at their wedding, they could win a trip to Mexico — and a chance to dive with friendly nurse sharks." I believe you'd have to throw a Chinese Banquet in order to qualify, but don't forget to watch the video and that may explain a little more.
Too bad I had my wedding already. A vacation sounds really good now~

Vivian & Will Wedding August 2009

Wow! I haven't posted for nearly a decade!! Well, the little guy is keeping me busy, but life is life and slowly picking up on work.

Vivian and Will was the last wedding I did for year 2009 and also the first wedding I did after I gave birth to my 8 month old. Finally have the chance to post their wedding!

Let me gather my thoughts... It was a great opportunity to meet Vivian and Will. We met only once for about 2 hours and sent perhaps 40 emails to each other regarding her wedding. That's how much time and effort we are willing to spend and value our customer. Really, it was by word of mouth how I got to meet this couple and they booked me well in advance. Not knowing I was going to be pregnant everyone told me to turn down the wedding because I was told to, but my gut feeling said, "Go For It!" I'm glad I stuck to my guns and did their wedding because I love to see a happy bride and remember the groom saying, "As long as she's happy, I'm happy." I even got a personal comment from the bride on the day of her wedding saying I'm a keeper to my husband who was helping me that day. I always thought it was the other way around.

A little over 2 weeks ago while working on a wedding project I had a friend stay with me. His name is Pumpkin. A golden doodle originally from Hong Kong and 3 years old now. His owners are on vacation and my husband and I doggy sat him for a bit. He stayed in my studio with me keeping me company and when work was done he got a nappy~

My second Vivian wedding this year. It turned out to be a great day and the wedding was really nice and intimate~ Congrats to the newlyweds J & V again!!

Her bouquet includes peony, roses, phalenopsis and cymbidium orchids, ranuculus, roses, and hydrangea. Due to the wishy washy weather in Vancouver it was hard to say whether or not there would be seasonal peonies available, but thankfully at the week of her wedding there were~ phew!

Went to my in laws for dinner tonight and received a bouquet of flowers plus a gold cow! It was made by an auntie from New York who comes almost every year for Grandma's birthday and her hobby is making crystal crafts! It's amazing how she makes it from scratch~!

We had a customer contact me last week from Hong Kong requesting to have an artificial arrangement made for a kids art studio grand opening. When you think of kids, you think of colorful and fun! Since I don't touch a lot on silks I decided to get my color pens and sketch book out to see what we could come up with! (of course the finished product looks better!) I must say it's a good thing the quality of silks are looking hotter and for those who are wondering what's the difference between arranging with silk and fresh, there really isn't a big difference. In fact the silks give you more flexibility and can be more fun to design with! Just be very careful not to burn yourself with the hot glue as Martha Stewart always says to her crafty guests on the show. Hope the kids will find the arrangement fun too!

If you love dogs, you'll love this movie. It's from the same producer as "Quill". The story is based in Japan with Mayuko Fukuda, who plays a 14 year old girl Akira. She meets a little pup in her life, but was sworn to 10 promises if she wanted to keep her. Rena Tanaka who plays the older version of Akira grew distant to her 10 year old companion and the rest you'll have to watch. It's a sad story, love story, a touching one, and something funny happens during the end!!
I love this movie not only for the dog, but also for the music! It's a movie anyone can watch!
